John W. Houchins says
I am not familiar with the Harry Potter series, so this comic confuses me.
Mairead Parkhurst says
John W. Houchins JK Rowling, the author, spoke out in support of a transphobic asshole recently which is another in a long line of transphobic decisions that she’s made. It’s making a lot of people feel really hurt and isolated and like they can’t enjoy the HP universe because of it. Most of the HP fans that I’ve seen are dead set against it though.
mathematiciowned says
What’s the relation with Goblet of Fire?
mathematiciowned says
What’s the relation with Goblet of Fire please?
George Bull-McLean says
I think it’s just an Example. Not connected to one book, just the series as a whole
Kimberly Brink says
John W. Houchins the first part is fairly self defining, but the second part is based on some really bad judgment of the author that has been in the news this week… The author gave support to a major anti – trans activist
Tomasz Gwóźdź says
To put it bluntly, JK Rowling is a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist).
John W. Houchins says
Oh, I was also not familiar with the author’s recent actions.
I’m not going to comment one way or the other on either. Not enough information, or space.
Alana Farley says
John W. Houchins she’s also super scared of aids and the people who have it… considers them werewolves… people who can’t control there urge to spred there illness… err… that’s a long story…
Javier PS says
JK Rowling said “biological sex is real” and the author of the webcomic translates her words as “trans people should not exist”.
Lily says
She has said a lot more than that, but I guess bigots like to ignored what actually happened. She claimed another woman (who had written an anti trans manifesto) got fired for saying “biological sex is real” when that woman actually published multiple transphobic tweets a week and was not in fact fired (she did not have her contract renewed).
depression comix says
Javier PS Not much of a “translation” needed. She made the tweet #IStandWithMaya as a hashtag. Maya Forstater was a researcher who lost her job for saying that people cannot change their biological sex. Read this to understan it further. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/19/world/europe/jk-rowling-maya-forstater-transgender.html
Mairead Parkhurst says
Javier PS she supported a blatant and unrepentant transphobic woman.
Christian Lehner says
No matter her sexual identity, her books are a truckload of infantile crap🤠😁🤠
John W. Houchins says
depression comix – thank you fir the references. I can see everyone is very supportive of those that wish to change their sexual orientation.
Without further comment, while I do not have any
malice towards those who do nor agreewith me, I don’t think I agree wth everyone here either.
I agree that we should enjoy our books as we make the stories “ours”, irregardless if we agree with the author’s… views outside if they’re creations that they share.
I am a Christian, so I know my views in things will not align with many here. Again, I do not hate anyone who does not agree with me. We all come to make our own decisions and choices.
Dave Jw Day says
John W., It’s the kind of double-speak that you are exhibiting – I do not hate but I condemn – that left me no choice but to abandon the hypocritical Church I grew up in.
John W. Houchins says
Dave Jw Day – no where in my note did I condemn anyone. I do not have that kind of authority, or power.
Darrell E. Manrique says
Christianity by itself doesn’t make anyone a bigot, but lots of bigots like to claim it Christianity backs them up. “I’m not allowed to treat you with decency because of my religion” is morally vacuous.
John W. Houchins says
Darrell E. Manrique – I agree that most that claim to be a Christian behave in such a way. I also i understand that I can be considered guilty by association.
I will not try and preach my beliefs. And although I do not agree with LGBTQ, I do not hate them.
Darrell E. Manrique says
John W. Houchins Can you explain what you mean by “do not agree with” then? Because from where I stand there’s nothing to agree or disagree with. You’re aware that LGBTQ people exist, and … what? You wish we didn’t? What else could this possibly mean?
John W. Houchins says
Darrell E. Manrique – this is how people come to hate others. You seem to be saying that, just because I do not agree with a chosen lifestyle, that I don’t want them to exist? That is imposing your perception onto my beliefs. Just like those who claim to be Christian and then make some conclusion that all LGBTQ are somehow child molesters (which I do not believe).
TrickyLA says
Hey buddy, it isn’t a ‘chosen lifestyle’. Also, this comic isn’t about sexual orientation in the first place.
Dana W says
Nobody chooses to be gay, or trans. Its not a choice, But in your world, if its not a choice than you must be a bigot. Therefore it has to be a choice. BTW. Lots of LGBT Christians.
John W. Houchins says
Darrell E. Manrique – do not make the same mistake that others who are Christian, or only claim to be, and take things to a conclusion that seems the only probable because not ask the information, or options, are known.
depression comix says
John W. Houchins one mistake you are making is “chosen lifestyle”. Believing in a religion is a choice. Being LGBTQ is not.
Dana Wolfe says
John W. Houchins You can’t change your orientation. You can suffer in the closet till you shrivel up inside. And this wasn;t about orientation. It was about identity.
John W. Houchins says
depression comix – I disagree. But, to me, I’m ok with disagreeing.
Paul Norton says
John W. Houchins Unless you have the experience of being part of that community, “disagreement” is a ludicrous statement. It’s like saying that someone can’t be left handed because you don’t believe that anyone could possibly favor their left hand over their right. If you haven’t had the experience, you have no rational way to judge. The knowledge is INHERENT, and not subject to external judgement. Bible or no. And BTW, there’s plenty of biblical scholarship that gives the lie to the claim homosexuality and transgenderism is forbidden. Bad translations of the Greek, and complete misunderstanding of cultural cues are rampant in the relevant passages.
depression comix says
John W. Houchins homophobia and transphobia come in many forms. passive-aggressively “disagreeing” with someone is one.
John W. Houchins says
depression comix – hire is disagreeing being “passive aggressive”?
Abraxas Qlippoth says
and once again for the upteenth time we see that “christian” is merely shorthand for bigotry
John W. Houchins says
Abraxas Qlippoth – then , isn’t that judging me?
Gennifer Bone says
Yes. Yes it is. You are being judged for speaking up on something you know nothing about, just to make a “love the dinner, hate the sin” spiel. This is not a space for you.
Dave Jw Day says
John W., again that’s double-speak… you’re saying that you yourself do not have the authority or power but that the God who you believe in and follow does. It follows that you do.
Mairead Parkhurst says
Fuck that. JK Rowling can go fuck herself. Her creation has moved beyond her and the (online unfortunately not real) wizarding community absolutely still accepts trans people.
Reina Maxine says
I wrote it in a different post too, but if anything else, she created a world with multiple themes of love and acceptance and anti-bigotry, along with parallels to the real world as well as how to go up against oppressive people. So it’s her own fault she provided such guidelines towards fight against the ones supporting the oppression.
Rachel Steed says
She may have made that world but we’re the people who live there and we love you exactly how you are. Courage, kindness, cleverness and ambition are *our* heritage and we are Hogwarts’ heirs
Astrid Rickman says
Rachel Steed
Reina Maxine says
If anything else, she created a world that inspired multiple themes of love and acceptance and anti-bigotry, along with parallels to the real world as well as how to go up against oppressive people. So if she wonders how others can go against that, it’s her own fault she also provided such a guideline.
jackmarten says
when i watch HP films i am not in them for the sake of sexual bullshit orientation, i only care about the spells they use and how much fun the visual effects are, besides if you are being rejected from the fantasy world as well, just build your own world by yourself.
“reality” is a cluster of failure as is, and nobody wants to stay in it, so just build your own idea reality and live in it by yourself, that’s why roleplaying was created. but i still get your point of view. that’s why i built up my own world!
clay jonathan says
Unfortunately it is really on heterosexual people who don’t really care about “sexual bullshit orientation” as their orientation is fairly well represented in media. Not being represented in nearly everything amounts to a kind of erasure. But that is really besides the point as the author shows support for actively transphobic people. What that says is that perhaps transphobia is built into the world she created. If you are not included in a world on purpose, what does that say?
But as for building your own world, that’s pretty unhealthy. Living in a reality other people don’t/can’t share is not a positive direction for mental health.
xboxfannumber1 says
The people who grew up in her world, those who read the books and watched the movies, have grown beyond her as the author. We find ourselves more loving and accepting. We tolerate better than even the author herself. Because of this, we see beyond the author’s bias and know that we can love the world we grew up in and with, without liking the author’s bias.
Alana Farley says
There’s this concept called death of the author people seem to ignore when talking about things like this. (It isn’t literal death) it’s where once an author or creator puts art out into the world, it becomes the worlds… they cannot make changes to it or dictate how it is seen by the public. It dose not matter what an author dose after they have created the art, because it no longer belongs to them. They are ‘dead’ metaphorically.
Anyways death of the author is mostly about interpretation but it applies here. If something means something to you then it dose not matter what the author intends, they are divorced from there work simply by the act of finishing it. *shrug*
Aizul Johari Zulkifli says
Just like George Lucas and Star Wars.
Alana Farley says
Aizul Johari Zulkifli yes lol
depression comix says
In the world of sequels, prequels, cease & desists, cannon and non-cannon, “death of the author” doesn’t hold as much water as it used to.
Alana Farley says
Patty Polish XD settle down there, there’s no one to virtue signal to by throwing around insults here. Hahaha
depression comix says
Alana Farley reporting PP for harassment
Alana Farley says
It’s okay. She’s entitled to think I’m rubbish. Maybe I am XD
The whole idea of death of the author and any other way of thinking about literary works is completely subjective… while I’m surprised I got that reaction… I’m not surprised people feel strongly about it either way…
Parker Gibson says
I don’t agree with Maya but I certainly don’t think that the view that people can’t change their biological would “have not exist.”
depression comix says
MIsgendering someone is denying them their existence.
Dana Wolfe says
Well, if it did I couldn’t have gotten my birth certificate changed after surgery. Legally I would not exist.
Dana Wolfe says
I felt guilty about the fact I’d never read her stuff, was planning to do so in 2020. Going to pass on that opportunity.
Paul Norton says
Red it, just don’t PAY for it.
Dana Wolfe says
Paul Norton Nah. I think I’ll decline. Not even for free.
depression comix says
Blocking PP from this page.
depression comix says
It’s hard to read it in a positive light after this.
Dana Wolfe says
Patty Polish Why? Because I don’t want to read adolescent wizard crap? Oh noes. I’m such a coward.
Opus the Poet says
I have the same problem with the author of the Stainless Steel Rat series. Good books, author is borderline mysogynist.
Dana W says
Women in the books were either stereotypes or super beings. same as the Reief stories.
mathematiciowned says
Why not provide the context about the recent news? I don’t believe the Harry Potter series itself is transphobic. Let’s not confuse the author with the author’s works.
I am familiar with the Harry Potter series and yet like John W. Houchins, ‘this comic confuses me.’ (https://www.depressioncomix.com/posts/441/#comment-24289)
Tab Enta says
clay, thank you so so so much for this one. i know you’re gonna get a lot of sealioning and ~devil’s advocates~ for this strip and i just want you to know that despite all that, this longtime trans depcom reader feels incredibly seen because of you. ❤
depression comix says
🏳️⚧🏳️⚧🏳️⚧ Thank you for your kind words and much ❤️to you!

JK did nothing wrong. Facts are facts even as they can somehow hurt our feelings.
clay says
Transphobia has no place here.
Yaron Kaplan says
So does this imply Phoenix is a transgender?
clay says
The name was a hint 🙂
JC Hale says
If the issue doesn’t affect you, then it doesn’t. Whatever. Roll your eyes and move along. There’s plenty of other news to get upset about lately. For me, though, it’s about not having to look over my shoulder for a knife in the back while I’m sitting in my favorite reading nook trying to find somewhere safe to escape reality to. I literally just came out as trans this year, and I still haven’t figured out whether or not it’s safe to tell my own family (which includes a few proper die-hard right-wingers). I need those escapes, and I need them not to hurt me. Whether or not the author I’m reading retweets TERFs is useful information to have before I walk into a punch I wasn’t ready for. Now I’m ready. It’s better to know.
For anyone looking for trans-inclusive escapism, I’ll recommend Ann Leckie. Her debut (the Ancillary trilogy) prominently features a genderless interstellar empire (wherein everyone regardless of identity or preference uses female pronouns as a matter of convenience, and is also fanatical about wearing gloves), and Provenance (a spin-off in the same universe) is set in another society where every citizen chooses their own gender (non-binary inclusive) as a coming-of-age rite. Neither story arc is *about* those details- they’re just there in the background to inform the setting; the story has nothing whatsoever to do with gender identity. It’s just a world where non-cis/het people are accepted as a fact of existence, and everybody just gets on with their own business (devious political maneuvering, high-stakes heists, convoluted revenge schemes, etc) without worrying about what’s in each others’ trousers. Imagine that.

Just to let everyone know, this page is a moderated safe space and any messages that are insulting and demeaning will just get deleted.
JC Hale says
…and thank you for that. Just because some insensitive bridge troll on the safe end of anonymity wants to play devil’s advocate doesn’t give them the right to screw with someone else’s will to live. I love this site a little more every time I visit it.
natalia says
Nor jk or maya are transphobes. Saying sex is real and unchangeable is not transphobia, neither is to refuse to call a man other than “male” bc he identifies as non-binary.
People need to calm down and accept that not all people who don’t agree with your views of the world hate you and want you dead, and that sometimes we don’t like reality and we can’t call ppl bigots for remind us abt it.
Felis Dee says
This argument doesn’t hold water. People get (rightly) insulted when a person they know well consistently calls them the wrong name. And that’s just your NAME. But a name is a large part of your identity, and so if someone can’t be arsed to remember a key part of your identity, it’s shows how much they do not respect you, and possibly hate you.
Gender is also a key part of identity. Cis men get outraged when others call them women. Cis women are insulted when they are called men. And usually, if someone sees that they have made that error, they apologize, correct themselves and everyone moves on. They don’t double down on “well, I’m gonna keep calling you a man because you look like one to me”. If people born as the same gender they identify as feel that uncomfortable being misgendered, imagine how uncomfortable it would be for someone who identifies as a different gender than the one they were born into. Except in their case, the person who misgendered them won’t apologize, won’t correct themselves, continues to misgender them, and then says there’s nothing to apologize for.
If you can’t see that, just imagine that someone decided to call you “Yeshuva” from now one because they think your name (I assume Natalia, but that could be a screen name) is stupid. And if you correct them, they tell you to get over it – that you’re Yeshuva from now on, and you’d better live with it because to them, you look like a Yeshuva. And tell me if that person respects you as a person, and whether you’d want to have anything to do with that person again.
Isabelle Parker says
Hoo boy, this is relevant again 😕
Robin D says
This discussion runs along many misguidances I read. And other trying to defend ideologies or freedom.
To me it is about reality; I am born in 1962 with both functioning reproductive organs, internally as well as externally. Bacause culture/religion/society did decree I should not exist like that, they closed me down below in a non -restorable way as a baby. I grew up under both hormonal inffluences and internal organs growth, while at the same time my world around me decreed I should not be what I was, while enforcing me into something what I never could be. I was bullied, raped, degraded, punished, dehumanized, demoted, discriminated, my whole life.
I got sick and almost died because the hormones they had forced me were giving me cancer, I survived that with finally understanding me after 38 years of personal ignorance and unknowing, let alone not-understanding the combination of my male as wel as my female self. Yes I was unknown why I had pain once a month, unknown why I had to swallow unknown medications, unknown why i was bullied, raped or else, unknown why my father as well as others did these thing while saying it would make me a man. Being raped makes you a man? I never understood. Now I do, 21 years ago, I stopped hormones, my body evolved again in its natural self except things which can’t change like vocal chords. Yes I am a natural Hermaphrodite, born both male AND female. I have had my monthly cycles, I have been pregnant by myself, I have made a girl pregnant, and still the world says I should not exist, I should not be, I can’t leave the door without discrimination or insults, monthly threaths, or yearly deaththreats or violent attempts, just because an ideology decrees I should not exist. At the same time I am already 22 yeaars alone, people either adore you because you are diffrent and daring (I don’t dare, I just am)Men want sex because of warped sexual phantasies, while the women I try to get to love me, are either ‘owned’ by another (who is instantly negative when seeing me) or nort interested as they prefer a ‘real’ man or ‘real’ woman.
My male and female side portray my experiences and this shaped a large amount of my personality. And this confuses people as not understanding that my female side feels such while my male side says thus, or reverse. The ideologies and discrapancy with my biological rare appearance caused friends to move away, and my family disintegrate,
And then still people don’t understand why I feel depressed after being totally alone, without love, without touch, without care, without intimacy—especially now under Covid regulations and restrictions
Religion, Culture or sociology or whatever ideology, humans appear in many different forms, and if there is a entity responsible for these creations, then what gives you as a mere variant creation the right to alter its creation of others or try to destroy them mentally, sexually, physically or restricts their life.
To the other LHTBQAI supporters here…Thanx…For the feeling that I may exist. Pity these discussions spur up even here just out of ideological disagreements. Pity and…very sad.
To the artist(s) love the art, love the text, really well made both, and often very recognizable. Did not desire to react initially, yet here I just had to react.
Kind Regards Robin (yes my mother gave me a name usefull for both genders, how supressed she was, she tried at least.
