Speaking as a teacher, I’m always thinking about this. I know it’s easier for people to focus on the negative than the positive, depressed or not, so I do my best to re-frame “needs improvement” comments into something as constructive as possible. When that’s not possible, I just hope that an earnest desire to help them improve is good enough to balance it out…
